The BBC took a huge risk in reviving the immensely popular “Upstairs, Downstairs“, but the results are nothing short of brilliant. For those familiar with the original series, which ran from 1971 to 1975, you’ll be giddy with delight at the return of this favorite public television classic — the original often associated with the phrase, “They just don’t make good television the way they used to!”
I was flipping the channels the other night and happened upon a rebroadcast of the first episode of the new series. Instantly, I was drawn into it. Then, Lady Maud Holland utters what could possibly be my favorite line of the whole episode:
“Persephone, in the space of 40 minutes, you’ve slapped a servant, distressed your sister, and, by delaying dinner, caused the cook to ruin a Marron SoufflĂ©. If you wish to eat while you’re here, I would suggest you open this door.”
Just brilliant.
There are three hour-long episodes this season (available online and on DVD), and it’s just been revealed that the show has been picked up again for 2012 with six more episodes.
Again, just brilliant.
Be sure to check this one out. I guarantee, it’s just as good as the original…

P.s. Also be sure to check out “Downtown Abbey” from earlier this year — a spin-off of “Upstairs, Downstairs“, which is equally as entertaining.
