I’ve never been a huge fan of Tyler Perry. His campy, costume comedies have always seemed hokey to me and haven’t really held my attention. When I saw this preview though, my opinion of him changed. Within two minutes, I saw a serious filmmaker emerge.
When I was growing up, my family owned an independent bookstore. I remember seeing this book on the shelf in the drama department and I was always intrigued by the cover. As a young boy, in an affluent, predominantly white community, I didn’t quite understand the intensity of the story and the intended meaning of the play. Flash forward a decade or two, I understand the influences now and have a renewed interest in this story. Although times have changed, the story is still the same; infidelity, abuse, life in the inner city, and racism. I’ll be interested to see how Perry updates the story, and how he uses the influences to shape the movie.
So needless to say, I’m excited to see this now. Let me know what you think.

Never mind, I read the review of this and it’s getting panned…
